When a Man Knows How to Live

When a Man Knows How to Live

When a man knows how to live
Is when he knows how to forgive,
And to love his fellowman,
When he knows how to sympathize
with men in their sorrows.
Yea-even in their sins.

When he know how to make friends,
And what’s more important, when he knows
how to keep them.
When he loves flowers,
And he feels the thrill of an old forgotten joy
when he hears the laughter of a little child.

When no voice of distress reaches his ear in vain,
And no hands seek his aid without a response.
When he can look in a wayside puddle,
And see something besides mud.
When he looks into the face of the most forlorn mortal,
And sees something besides sin.

When he knows how to pray,
And when he knows how to love.
When he has kept faith with himself,
And with his fellowman and with Almighty God.

In his hand he carries a sword of evil,
But in his heart he has a beautiful song.
He is glad to live and not afraid to die.

That’s it, that’s the way to live.
